God’s Example of Pre-forgiveness
I have fantastic news: God did not wait for humanity to repent before preparing the way for redemption. Before the world was created, Christ was appointed as the sacrificial Lamb. Revelation 13:8 describes Him as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” The cross was not God’s reaction to our sin; it was His eternal plan of redemption. Long before we drew our first breath, God had already prepared the way for us to be forgiven through Jesus Christ. This is pre-forgiveness in its purest form. God’s love moved toward us before we moved toward Him. His grace was prepared before we recognized our need, and Christ paid the price before we ever understood the depth of our sin.
Forgiveness is not something we must beg God to give. It is something He desires for us to receive. Acts 10:43 declares that everyone who believes in Jesus “receives forgiveness of sins through His name.” Ephesians 1:7 says, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Through the finished work of Christ, forgiveness has been provided. Our response is to repent, believe, confess, and receive the grace God has already made available. We do not have to persuade a reluctant God to forgive us. We do not need to plead until He becomes merciful. Mercy is already in His heart, grace has already been extended, and the price has already been paid. God is not withholding forgiveness from those who turn to Him. He invites us to receive it freely through faith in Jesus Christ. This truth changes everything. We are not forgiven because we begged long enough, cried hard enough, or punished ourselves severely enough. We are forgiven because Jesus shed His blood, carried our sin, and completed the work of redemption at the cross. 1 John 1:9 teaches us that when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Confession is not begging. It is agreeing with God, turning from sin, and receiving the cleansing He has promised.
Because we have received this abundant forgiveness, we are called to extend that same grace to others—not merely out of obligation, but as a reflection of the love we have received. The Holy Spirit empowers us to forgive as God has forgiven us, even before others apologize. True forgiveness is not based on another person’s actions; it is rooted in our identity in Christ and empowered by the grace of God dwelling within us. Walking in pre-forgiveness means preparing our hearts to release offenses before they take root. It means refusing to allow bitterness, resentment, anger, and pain to build a permanent residence within us. Just as God prepared forgiveness before we asked, we can prepare grace in our hearts before another person ever needs it.
Pre-forgiveness does not mean that wrongdoing is acceptable or that repentance is unnecessary. It means we decide in advance that offense will not control us, bitterness will not bind us, and another person’s actions will not steal the peace Christ has given us.
Pre-forgiveness invites us to embrace Christ’s victory and refuse to be weighed down by unforgiveness. We have freely received grace, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can freely release it—before others ask, before they change, and even before they realize they need forgiveness.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for preparing the way of forgiveness before I ever knew You. Your love moved toward me before I moved toward You, and Your grace made a way for my redemption before I could ever ask. Thank You that I do not have to beg You to forgive me. Through the blood of Jesus, forgiveness has already been provided. Today, I repent, believe, confess, and freely receive the forgiveness and cleansing You desire for me to experience. Deliver me from guilt, shame, and the desire to punish myself for what Jesus has already carried. Help me to rest in the finished work of the cross and walk confidently in the freedom You have given me. Holy Spirit, empower me to extend this same pre-forgiveness to others. Reveal any lingering bitterness or offense within my heart, and break every chain that has held me captive.
I release every hurt, every wound, and every injustice into Your hands. I refuse to allow unforgiveness to take root within me. Fill me instead with Your supernatural peace, joy, love, and freedom. Just as You prepared forgiveness before I asked, prepare my heart to extend grace before another person ever needs it.
Today, I choose to walk in the fullness of Your love, transformed by the power of pre-forgiveness.
